Due for release in June is a Cinematic Story Expansion as a free content update that will act as an epilogue to the original story mode. Whilst having a Story mode at all may seem like a token gesture there is a reason behind it. There is no particular order to play them in but there may be some confusion until you complete all stories due to the cross-over element of some characters. Stories take a paltry 5-15 minutes to complete and have a mixture of cut-scenes and fighting. Each of the sixteen characters has their own story which, if IвЂ™m really honest, are very short and underwhelming for the most part. The story mode on offer is a bare-bones look back at some of the history behind the characters rather than a story in its own right.

The Champion Edition and the new V-Skills solves the problem for the latter but getting ordinary gamers excited about another sequel is going to be more difficult.Despite its name, SFV is actually the eighth in the series and is much the same as the seven games that preceded it. Street Fighter 4 still feels more polished, with Street Fighter 5 suffering from inexplicably long load times and frame rate problems for background characters. The ultimate question is whether Street Fighter 5 is better than Street Fighter 4, and for us the answer is no, not quite. Add all that to what already exists and youвЂ™ve got a game that is both overflowing in content and almost unrecognisable from the state it originally launched in.ДЄlthough some V-Skills only augment existing moves, or are purely defensive, many of them are completely new, which means youвЂ™ve got to rethink your strategies when playing as and against each of the characters.

There are a few exceptions in terms of content created specifically for the Capcom Pro Tour or the Fighting Chance mode but other than that you get everything thatвЂ™s ever been released in the last four years. ThatвЂ™s 40 characters (it only started with 16), and over 2,000 piece of smaller add-on content, including costumes and stages. Like most games as a service titles, Street Fighter 5 has been following a seasonal schedule for its DLC releases and the main draw of the Champion Edition is that you get everything at once. Capcom couldnвЂ™t release Street Fighter 6 without incurring even more fan anger and so theyвЂ™ve just had to stick things out and make the best of it. That illustrated the problem with supporting just one game for a whole generation: if it gets off to a bad start youвЂ™re stuck with it. It did recover, and relatively quickly, but its initially poor reputation never went away. CPU, too few characters, and not nearly enough ways to earn currency, Street Fighter 5вЂ™s launch was an avalanche of bad publicity. With no arcade mode, no story mode, no vs. Then the game came out and it became clear what a terrible idea it all was.

At first that seemed a very modern, forward-thinking approach with no obvious drawbacks. Instead of an endlessly array of Super Street Fighter Turbos, and the like, all the updates would be available separately, either to buy with real money or earned in-game currency. When Street Fighter 5 first launched in 2016 it did so with the promise that it would be the only time youвЂ™d ever need to buy the game.
